This article was first posted by the Fide Fundacion on 12 January 2021, at the same time as the shorter summary version. In these articles I referred to statements made by the British Government and the EU Commission to the effect that it was time to move on, and build a new and even special relationship based on the Trade and Cooperation Agreement agreed at the end of 2020. This has yet to happen, but the invasion of Ukraine by Russia is a reminder to the British Government that its relationship with Europe is too important to neglect, and a reminder to the EU and its Member States that the UK is too significant a European military power to be kept in the political cold just because of what they see as UK bloody-mindedness over the Northern Ireland Protocol.
